Talk Summary:

Although it's possible to write documents involving mathematics, or complex documents with bibliographical citations, cross referencing and indexes, using Microsoft Word, this can be painful, and the results are typically unattractive. This How-To talk is about an open source alternative called LaTeX (pronounced "laytech"), which, like HTML, is a markup language: you describe what you want in a plain text file, and then use a program to convert this description to PostScript or PDF. I'll show you how to get started using LaTeX, and point you to various online resources that will help you learn more about it.
