The Department of Computing and Information Sciences at Kansas State University invites applications for an Application Scientist/Engineering Technician Specialist. This is a regular, full-time appointment. This position will assist research groups with effectively utilizing high performance computing and scientific applications support/development. Responsibilities will be split approximately 60/40 between these two areas. The Application Scientist is responsible for the collaborative support of targeted sciences research projects, preferably with an emphasis on applications in the engineering and/or life sciences. The nature of the collaboration will include development of parallel simulation, modeling or data analysis algorithms, assistance with implementation and optimization of parallel applications, performance analysis, and participation in the development of papers and reports. Research will be targeted through evaluation of the potential for new numerical techniques to accelerate discovery and extend or expand the funding portfolio.
Position responsibilities will include facilitating the migrations of large-scale computing applications to supercomputer environments and evangelize research groups in effectively using HPC and “Big Data” techniques and resources. The successful candidate will design, develop, and test new software tools for users to support application areas, work with technical staff to provide timely and effective user support, and assist system administrators with operational activities. The candidate will also help publicize successful techniques for education and research via talks, technical papers, blogs, and national organizations (e.g., XSEDE, CASC).
The minimum education requirement is a bachelor’s degree in Applied Mathematics, Engineering, or sciences discipline. Experience requirements include 3+ years of scientific applications and modeling research group support experience with a strong computational component; knowledge of or experience with advanced computational applications in engineering and/or life sciences research; significant use of HPC resources including shell scripting; scientific workflow analysis; broad knowledge of parallel and distributed systems and computing techniques. The position requires that candidate to have strong interpersonal and communication skills as well as HPC use, education and teaching experience. Preference will be given to candidates with an advanced degree in degree fields mentioned under minimum requirements and possessing a strong background in engineering sciences.
